Renovation Don’ts

Is your home ready for a change? Are you wanting to renovate? Before you get started, there are many things you should keep in mind. We have put together a list of things that often go wrong or should be avoided when renovating your house.

  • Before you even start renovating, know that it is the right choice for you, your family, and your home. It is important that you evaluate all orenovating dontf these areas, because if you are working a full time job and have a family, it may be difficult to maintain a positive outlook when your house is being torn apart. You don’t want to stretch yourself too thin or rush in to anything you might regret in the future! If renovating is right for you, get to planning! Don’t start anything before you have a firm plan and budget in place.
  • Budgeting is a main area where many people go wrong. Do not set an unrealistic budget. While renovating, plan and expect additional costs to pop up. Incorporate these costs into your budget and plan for them. Another mistake made by renovators is by going too cheap. If you are going to renovate, do it right and do a good job. If you cannot afford to do it this way, wait until you can. Once you have a good plan and budget, get started. Once you have started, don’t change your mind and make a bunch of new decisions. Changing your plans will greatly impact your budget and you will most likely end up spending more than what you intended to.
  • When it comes to the renovation itself, don’t get too carried away with trends. Trends come and go, in a couple of years your “trendy kitchen” will become dated and your renovation may end up decreasing the value of your home. Along with this, keep your renovations in line with the type of home you have. For example, if you own a log cabin on a lake, it would look a little funny if you had a $2,000 chandelier hanging in the entryway. You also want to keep the exterior looking similar to those around it. You may think updating everything may be beneficial, but it could make your home stick out like a sore thumb and upset your neighbors.
